SORRY! ®

The Fun of Board Games

Yellow always wins!” my sister would call out as a kid whenever she saw the SORRY ® board.
I remember the camaraderie and the competition whenever we played (and believe me when I say that there were many games played over the years). Forty years later, I still have that beloved original game with all its game pieces and slightly worn cards!

I remember during one of my field placements in graduate school that, despite my love for board games, using them during speech therapy was somehow a cop-out. Somehow my therapy should be more creative, more exciting, but then I saw how much my school age friends loved my childhood game. My own childhood feelings were resurrected and I found myself using my sister’s words, “Yellow always wins!” and regaling tales of my childhood experiences.

Games teach us to be okay with competition, to learn to win gracefully and deal with the agony of defeat. These are all good lessons for life. I now use games like SORRY ® as part of my therapy practice and see the value in them. I encourage you to kick it “old school” and  bring out a classic board game into your sessions this week!
