Making Language Visible
After watching one of my little autistic friends with his collection of alphabet, numbers and logos flashcards (how fun!), I wanted to make language visuals for him using Lesson Pix. I have been using Marge Blanc’s unofficial core grammar handout with him, which targets language in Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) in stages 4 and 5. His mom and I model language including “I see” phrases, “-ing” verbs, “I like it” etc.
My little friend is learning to read unique words like “bison” and “vulture”, resulting in increased language. I am forever curious how my young autistic friends learn visually and through early reading before age five. With my curiosity sparked, I made flashcards to see if visual support would increase his use of the phrases in spontaneous conversation. I’ll continue to explore new ideas and materials for my little friends and their creative parents. I am not sure yet if the flashcards will make a difference, as progress takes time.
