Comprehensive Literacy

In this series, we will take a deeper dive into literacy. Recently, I attended a webinar hosted by LessonPix, a company that generates materials for speech, language, and now literacy goals. During the webinar, the discussion of comprehensive literacy was discussed based on Erickson and Koppenhaver’s book “Comprehensive Literacy For All.” This book highlights the importance of giving children with all abilities the opportunity to learn to read and write. The authors propose a model that includes reading comprehension instruction, word study, self-directed reading and writing.

As I primarily work with children 5 years and under, how can I implement these principles into my work? The book goes into depth on the use of emergent literacy methods which include alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, shared reading and writing, and independent reading and writing. Over the next few weeks, I will highlight how I am incorporating these strategies into both my group work and individual sessions with personal stories and reflections.

Stay tuned for next week’s first principle: Alphabet Knowledge!
