Hello, friends and happy Thursday to you!
I’m continuing my Therapy Bag series with items that I would leave with my clients and their caregivers. Today I’m featuring Kevin the Car and his accompanying driving visual and parent handout!
Kevin has been a beloved part of my early intervention practice motivating my littlest friends to use first words like “go,” “up,” “down,” and “car.” For my friends who are learning to make word combinations, “go car” or “go up” would be the next step for building their language skills. My parent handout (pictured below) focuses on the word “go” and provides strategies to promote the use of this powerful word! It highlights the key ingredients, including the elements of including the modeling of a gesture, object play skill, sound effect, single word, word combinations, and a possible song to sing.

As part of my home therapy kit, I plan to make a 3D version of Kevin to help children make the connection between 2D and 3D images. This is an important step for children that builds thinking skills by learning visual discrimination, problem solving and the differences between real world objects, and how that object is represented in picture form. When a child makes this connection, there are so many opportunities for a child to explore his or her world and build a strong vocabulary!
