The Courage Award

It Takes Courage to Change

This week I want to recognize that it takes courage to change. This picture is of my daughter, Grace, when she was three years old receiving her preschool courage award. Her smile says it all! When her name was called in the classroom, I remember being overwhelmed with pride at the courage she exemplified in how she navigated some physical challenges that she was born with. I have watched her be courageous in many aspects of life since then.

Being courageous is hard. Changing is hard. Working to get better takes courage everyday. I think anyone who is looking to change deserves a courage award as an acknowledgement that they are doing their best!

This is also true in therapy. It takes courage to work on goals and strategies that are put in place to help change happen, to encourage our families to put in the work, and for us as clinicians to have the courage to guide and cheer on each family in their efforts.

Courage is hard. Courage is necessary. Courage is celebrated.
Let’s be courageous in our work and in how we encourage both ourselves and the families we work with!
