Oh, Mr. Snuggles
The Power of Piggyback Songs
This week I talked with one of my moms about the use of songs. She shared that, in addition to using the strategy for leaving off the last word, she uses piggyback songs. She laughed and said she sings everything. For those who are not familiar, a piggyback song is when you take a familiar melody and change the words. There are some great early childhood songs melodies like Frere Jacques, Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush, Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, and The Wheels on the Bus, just to name a few.
I asked this mom if she would share her song lyrics so the tune of Oh Mr. Sun. She changed the words to “Oh, Mr. Snuggles” to help her toddler transition from book reading (which he is currently obsessed with) to snuggling before being put in his bed.
Here is the piggyback song she uses:
